Cole Pepper and Rich Goldfarb met at Rich’s restaurant, Blackjack’s Best BBQ in the Spring of 2002.  Cole, who grew up in barbecue crazed Kansas City and who has judged several barbecue contests, immediately recognized that Blackjack’s was, indeed, the best barbecue in Jacksonville. 

New York-born Rich, immediately recognized that Cole ate a lot of barbecue.  The two quickly struck up a friendship.  But how did the sauce come to be?

As a sports anchor on WOKV Radio, Cole wanted to give something away on the air that wasn’t just the same old T-Shirt and hat combination.  So Cole asked Rich: “If I give you a basic idea for a sauce, could you cook it up?”

Rich said yes and immediately, the research and development began.  Rich researched flavor, consistency and texture for the sauce, and as the duo would taste each new batch, they would develop their midsections.

Finally, they found the perfect blend of sweet and hot.  They had created the perfect Sweet-Hot Sauce.  In a matter of months, many of the regulars at Blackjack’s embraced the sauce and told Rich and Cole that they should sell it.  As the popularity of the sauce grew, they really had no option.  So off to retail they went...and the rest is tasty history.
