Here are the final results for the Pro and Backyard divisions of the 2014 Jacksonville Backyard BBQ Championships.

Note that in the Backyard Division, we have a “one trophy maximum” meaning that some teams who scored higher in some categories, did not win trophies. The winners are noted in bold. Additionally, where there are ties in scores, a tie breaking procedure was used. The exception was in Pro Ribs, where each team had identical scores.

  1. We had a blast at this competition. You need to increase your advertising next year. More people should know about this! If I didn’t have a friend competing, I wouldn’t have known about this event. It’s fun, family friendly, and tasty!!! The bounce house for the kids was fantastic. Maybe add another one next year. Only negative- The availability of beverages (water, soda, etc) was a little lacking and the price was crazy. It cost me more to buy a bottle of water and a 12oz can of soda ($6) than two half pints of ice cream ($4) for my kids. The ice cream was amazing and a nice option for something sweet with all the savory food around. Perhaps offering one central location for drinks, snacks, and desserts would be a good idea. We will definitely attend this event next year and bring lots of friends!

  2. I enjoyed judging the event , its was well organized ,and I met alot of great people. I listened to local radio stations and didnt hear any advertising . I also think you should have a dessert or sauce competition, considering a lot of cook teams were trying to sell products . I drove up from Miami,Fl. I would love to Judge this event this next year . Thanks again.

    1. Thanks, Roy. We enjoyed having you judge the event, as well. We were actually on the following radio stations: WOKV, the dominant NewsTalk station in town, WJCT, the public radio station and Gator Country (one of our judges hosts the morning show on that station). We also had promotion of the event on WJXT, Channel 4, the heritage station in town and an independent, CW-17. Additionally, we appeared in Jacksonville Magazine, Buzz Magazine and on Daily Billboards and a digital billboard as well. We also have a strong social media presence in town. It’s a pretty big media footprint for a charity event! As for the desert or sauce competition, we have considered that, but with a one day event, we think that having the People’s Choice Award serves as an umbrella for all of those things. I look forward to seeing you back for next year’s event!
